There are SO MANY photo opportunities around us at ANY given moment! My hopes with this photoshop tutorial is to inspire you to look at items around you different and come up with new and exciting ways to incorporate them into composite editing.

You can use existing photos you already have and smash them together in to fantasy-inspired, illusion / composites - it's a really fun and creative way to re-visit old photography and get even more mileage out of it. Enjoy!

0:00:00.030,0:00:03.149
what's up everybody Peter MacKinnon here

0:00:01.770,0:00:05.609
and today we're talking about how you

0:00:03.149,0:00:08.130
can take photos like this and turn them

0:00:05.609,0:00:12.240
into this by creating your own fantasy

0:00:08.130,0:00:15.120
composit photos in Photoshop and oh does

0:00:12.240,0:00:24.779
it look badass I almost hit myself in

0:00:15.120,0:00:26.250
the face on that one intro okay you

0:00:24.779,0:00:27.660
might be asking yourself Pete what to

0:00:26.250,0:00:29.939
conferences and I would say to you

0:00:27.660,0:00:32.340
imagine a beautiful yacht in the middle

0:00:29.939,0:00:33.960
of the ocean two chicks are on the edge

0:00:32.340,0:00:36.239
of that yacht sipping champagne with a

0:00:33.960,0:00:38.879
flock of birds above some dude is

0:00:36.239,0:00:40.620
perfect mid pocahontas swan dive off the

0:00:38.879,0:00:43.140
tail end there's a couple of scuba

0:00:40.620,0:00:45.090
diving below surrounded by a beautiful

0:00:43.140,0:00:48.000
colorful school of fish a shark in the

0:00:45.090,0:00:50.489
distance and you say to yourself how how

0:00:48.000,0:00:53.160
could that picture be taken well I will

0:00:50.489,0:00:55.410
tell you how chances are it was taken in

0:00:53.160,0:00:57.510
several different stages the chicks were

0:00:55.410,0:00:59.789
taken separately the dude Swan diving

0:00:57.510,0:01:01.920
was separate the birds added in post the

0:00:59.789,0:01:04.650
fish added in post maybe taken

0:01:01.920,0:01:06.630
separately but the main point is all of

0:01:04.650,0:01:08.850
these items were taken and put together

0:01:06.630,0:01:11.100
into what's called a composite image now

0:01:08.850,0:01:12.720
why I call this fantasy Caucasus is

0:01:11.100,0:01:15.090
because if you think about it that

0:01:12.720,0:01:16.890
yachts scenario could very well happen

0:01:15.090,0:01:18.420
you look at that shotty McCool yacht

0:01:16.890,0:01:20.670
party that's that's a good photo they

0:01:18.420,0:01:22.619
did that very well however Banff

0:01:20.670,0:01:26.100
National Park coming out of your dryer

0:01:22.619,0:01:27.630
is not possible and that is why I love

0:01:26.100,0:01:29.610
it because you're presenting someone

0:01:27.630,0:01:31.380
with something that they have never seen

0:01:29.610,0:01:33.299
before and maybe would never have

0:01:31.380,0:01:34.890
thought of ever being able to see you're

0:01:33.299,0:01:36.509
just creating this brand new thing it's

0:01:34.890,0:01:37.890
like the first time you saw a lightsaber

0:01:36.509,0:01:39.960
and you were like wow

0:01:37.890,0:01:42.299
why doesn't that exist that's the

0:01:39.960,0:01:44.250
coolest thing ever cheers George the key

0:01:42.299,0:01:46.229
is just looking at things differently we

0:01:44.250,0:01:47.880
walk by our dryers every day we open the

0:01:46.229,0:01:49.799
fridge every day you put dog food in the

0:01:47.880,0:01:51.869
dog bowl every day these are all

0:01:49.799,0:01:54.329
potential photo opportunities that we

0:01:51.869,0:01:56.790
can create these abstract composit from

0:01:54.329,0:01:58.950
using photos that we already have in our

0:01:56.790,0:02:01.079
archive I took that shot in Van Slyke a

0:01:58.950,0:02:02.579
year and a half to two years ago and now

0:02:01.079,0:02:04.409
I'm able to fuse these two things

0:02:02.579,0:02:06.479
together to create something brand new

0:02:04.409,0:02:07.469
that's a visually stunning piece of art

0:02:06.479,0:02:09.450
so I think I'm going to start a new

0:02:07.469,0:02:11.459
series on this kind of like an abstract

0:02:09.450,0:02:12.480
photography series on how we can

0:02:11.459,0:02:13.860
creatively think

0:02:12.480,0:02:16.470
and come up with different ways to

0:02:13.860,0:02:18.569
Photoshop and manipulate everyday items

0:02:16.470,0:02:20.670
or just creative ways to shoot and

0:02:18.569,0:02:22.319
display our photos do you guys like that

0:02:20.670,0:02:25.500
idea want to see more of this type of

0:02:22.319,0:02:27.510
thing yeah let me know below I'd love to

0:02:25.500,0:02:30.090
hear your thoughts but with that being

0:02:27.510,0:02:31.379
said let's jump into how to actually do

0:02:30.090,0:02:33.090
this because it's a lot easier than you

0:02:31.379,0:02:34.709
think but Before we jump into it I want

0:02:33.090,0:02:36.450
to say thanks to our sponsor for today's

save yourself ten percent off so Oh done

0:03:13.590,0:03:17.160
save some money

0:03:14.579,0:03:19.680
good stuff website and grab your old

0:03:17.160,0:03:21.690
computer sits down at your desk open up

0:03:19.680,0:03:23.519
your phone turn it landscape whatever

0:03:21.690,0:03:25.739
put your headphones in take them out

0:03:23.519,0:03:26.970
let's go okay once you have your photo

0:03:25.739,0:03:29.099
whatever it is that you're going to use

0:03:26.970,0:03:30.780
I'm using a dryer in assistance you can

0:03:29.099,0:03:32.459
use a microwave you can use the fridge

0:03:30.780,0:03:34.049
you can use your closet whatever the

0:03:32.459,0:03:36.389
toilet you can use the toilet if you

0:03:34.049,0:03:37.590
wanted to but something that opens for

0:03:36.389,0:03:39.359
this instance if you want to follow

0:03:37.590,0:03:41.459
along the best might be easier to use

0:03:39.359,0:03:42.959
your dryer as well so once you're taking

0:03:41.459,0:03:44.489
that photo bring it into Photoshop it's

0:03:42.959,0:03:46.530
going to open up Camera Raw I've already

0:03:44.489,0:03:48.030
done a couple tweaks to it and when

0:03:46.530,0:03:49.380
you're happy with the exposure I want to

0:03:48.030,0:03:51.359
make mine a little more blue and I'll

0:03:49.380,0:03:53.370
tell you guys why at the end of this

0:03:51.359,0:03:56.129
tutorial just go ahead and hit open

0:03:53.370,0:03:57.599
image and you should be good to go now

0:03:56.129,0:03:58.799
from this point we're going to do a

0:03:57.599,0:04:00.569
couple of things we're just going to hit

0:03:58.799,0:04:02.220
command + J on that background which is

0:04:00.569,0:04:03.690
going to duplicate it and we're going to

0:04:02.220,0:04:05.160
drag that background layer to the

0:04:03.690,0:04:07.230
garbage just because it's locked and we

0:04:05.160,0:04:10.019
just want access double click on that

0:04:07.230,0:04:12.329
name it dryer that way we we can keep

0:04:10.019,0:04:13.680
things nice and tidy here and I'm going

0:04:12.329,0:04:15.959
to drag in the photo that you're going

0:04:13.680,0:04:18.180
to use to make come out of the dryer

0:04:15.959,0:04:20.340
we're going to use to make that narnia

0:04:18.180,0:04:22.530
fantasy kind of thing here so once you

0:04:20.340,0:04:24.240
get the photo open hit command a it's

0:04:22.530,0:04:27.120
going to select all of it

0:04:24.240,0:04:30.960
and see if copying it command W closes

0:04:27.120,0:04:33.509
it command V paste it hit okay good to

0:04:30.960,0:04:35.970
go make sure that layer is on the bottom

0:04:33.509,0:04:37.919
and we're going to name that damn that's

0:04:35.970,0:04:39.389
Banff National Park so we'll leave that

0:04:37.919,0:04:40.949
right there now it's important to say

0:04:39.389,0:04:42.660
the photo that you're going to use like

0:04:40.949,0:04:44.190
the two photos meet to work well

0:04:42.660,0:04:46.199
together if you don't have a photo that

0:04:44.190,0:04:48.180
works well it's going to be hard to do

0:04:46.199,0:04:51.780
as an example of that I did one earlier

0:04:48.180,0:04:53.490
it just didn't look as good of the snow

0:04:51.780,0:04:55.020
coming out of the dryer and I tried to

0:04:53.490,0:04:56.940
kind of make it it wasn't really working

0:04:55.020,0:04:59.159
for me so then I moved on to a different

0:04:56.940,0:05:02.190
shot which is this road shot and who

0:04:59.159,0:05:03.900
works way better so take it from me you

0:05:02.190,0:05:06.120
got to have two images that complement

0:05:03.900,0:05:07.979
each other that work well to get the

0:05:06.120,0:05:09.000
best result the reason this one works so

0:05:07.979,0:05:11.280
well because we've got those leading

0:05:09.000,0:05:13.800
lines of the road that diminishes deep

0:05:11.280,0:05:15.750
into the dryer that looks also when you

0:05:13.800,0:05:17.550
reverse that like it's coming out of the

0:05:15.750,0:05:19.949
dryer so there's just two shots that

0:05:17.550,0:05:22.470
complement each other well so at this

0:05:19.949,0:05:24.389
point we just want to make a we're going

0:05:22.470,0:05:26.759
to reset our colors down here by hitting

0:05:24.389,0:05:29.039
X and D that resets them make sure your

0:05:26.759,0:05:30.690
foreground is white you can hit X to do

0:05:29.039,0:05:32.520
that and come down to the ellipse tool

0:05:30.690,0:05:35.070
and we're going to drag a perfect circle

0:05:32.520,0:05:36.659
by holding shift and dragging to around

0:05:35.070,0:05:39.300
the size you think that opening is in

0:05:36.659,0:05:41.520
the dryer and then when you're happy to

0:05:39.300,0:05:43.380
move that to the top layer so that we

0:05:41.520,0:05:46.469
can see it and then move it into place

0:05:43.380,0:05:47.789
to get the best result drop that opacity

0:05:46.469,0:05:49.409
so you can see exactly where it is now I

0:05:47.789,0:05:52.050
can see that's overlapping it's a little

0:05:49.409,0:05:55.440
too big so ctrl T brings up the sizing

0:05:52.050,0:05:58.229
box and you can size that down to the

0:05:55.440,0:06:00.210
appropriate size hit V to get back to

0:05:58.229,0:06:01.889
your move tool and then just position to

0:06:00.210,0:06:04.110
where you want it I could maybe use it

0:06:01.889,0:06:07.080
just ever so slightly a little bit

0:06:04.110,0:06:09.000
smaller right there and then move that

0:06:07.080,0:06:11.819
over it oh good to go you can bring

0:06:09.000,0:06:13.530
that'll pass to be back up now while you

0:06:11.819,0:06:15.659
are still clicked on that highlighted

0:06:13.530,0:06:17.880
hold command and click the layer again

0:06:15.659,0:06:19.770
that makes it into the selection so we

0:06:17.880,0:06:21.930
can come down to the drier layer click

0:06:19.770,0:06:24.870
that once and then come down here to the

0:06:21.930,0:06:27.330
bottom add layer mask don't do anything

0:06:24.870,0:06:30.569
yet don't hit anything pans off hit

0:06:27.330,0:06:32.219
command I that inverts it and now we're

0:06:30.569,0:06:34.560
just about good to go you can go up to

0:06:32.219,0:06:37.350
the ellipse layer and hide it

0:06:34.560,0:06:38.640
which one ah shows us the BAM

0:06:37.350,0:06:40.020
underneath it I'm sure you've just

0:06:38.640,0:06:41.460
punched a hole in that photo kind of

0:06:40.020,0:06:43.980
like what we talked about in me how to

0:06:41.460,0:06:45.510
fake anything in your photos tutorial so

0:06:43.980,0:06:47.730
if we click that bottom layer the banth

0:06:45.510,0:06:50.070
layer we can actually move that around

0:06:47.730,0:06:52.530
wherever we want so I am just going to

0:06:50.070,0:06:54.060
move it here I want to see more of the

0:06:52.530,0:06:56.610
mountains I'm happy with that that looks

0:06:54.060,0:06:58.260
good go back up to the drier layer and

0:06:56.610,0:07:00.150
then we're going to drop the opacity on

0:06:58.260,0:07:01.860
that so we can see the road now I know a

0:07:00.150,0:07:03.060
lot of you people in the past that

0:07:01.860,0:07:05.370
Orioles were like why aren't you using

0:07:03.060,0:07:07.920
the pen tool use the pen cool what's

0:07:05.370,0:07:10.170
wrong with you I'm cool don't use an

0:07:07.920,0:07:12.030
ellipse but in this instance I just need

0:07:10.170,0:07:14.700
a perfect circle and an ellipse gives me

0:07:12.030,0:07:16.620
a perfect circle so done now in this

0:07:14.700,0:07:18.150
instance I want to cut out the road I

0:07:16.620,0:07:20.160
want to cut out those leading lines I'm

0:07:18.150,0:07:21.960
going to use the pen tool so come on

0:07:20.160,0:07:24.600
over here click the pen tool it's right

0:07:21.960,0:07:25.800
above the T for text come back over to

0:07:24.600,0:07:27.630
the photo and this is what I'm going to

0:07:25.800,0:07:29.430
do I'm going to click on one part of the

0:07:27.630,0:07:31.800
road that is in the dryer if you will

0:07:29.430,0:07:33.540
I'm going to come all the way over off

0:07:31.800,0:07:35.520
spring and click again I've just

0:07:33.540,0:07:37.650
basically made myself a guide aligned

0:07:35.520,0:07:40.080
I'm going to go all the way over around

0:07:37.650,0:07:42.360
the borders of the photo and click Jack

0:07:40.080,0:07:44.130
here so we're back on that line and then

0:07:42.360,0:07:45.060
I'm going to click inside the dryer so

0:07:44.130,0:07:47.160
you just cut that out

0:07:45.060,0:07:49.710
and connect where I started at the

0:07:47.160,0:07:52.530
beginning to make this a selection hold

0:07:49.710,0:07:54.930
ctrl and click or right click right

0:07:52.530,0:07:57.630
click there and select make selection

0:07:54.930,0:08:00.210
and then just hit OK so that whole thing

0:07:57.630,0:08:04.380
is selected now and now what you want to

0:08:00.210,0:08:06.660
do is go over to the mask on that dryer

0:08:04.380,0:08:09.090
layer and hit option delete and

0:08:06.660,0:08:10.920
essentially we just masked out the rest

0:08:09.090,0:08:12.660
of that row that we've selected with the

0:08:10.920,0:08:15.120
pen tool from this point you can hit

0:08:12.660,0:08:16.800
command D that D selects everything and

0:08:15.120,0:08:19.680
then we can drag it'll pass to be back

0:08:16.800,0:08:22.110
up and boom Vance is now coming out of

0:08:19.680,0:08:24.360
your dryer what and we're almost done at

0:08:22.110,0:08:25.710
this point all I want to do is duplicate

0:08:24.360,0:08:28.380
that Vance layer because I want to make

0:08:25.710,0:08:31.530
a reflection in the dryer door so drag

0:08:28.380,0:08:34.340
that to the top hit command T and then

0:08:31.530,0:08:37.500
right-click or ctrl click and hit flip

0:08:34.340,0:08:39.090
horizontal and then drop the opacity on

0:08:37.500,0:08:41.039
that because we want to move this over

0:08:39.090,0:08:42.900
it's a little bit hard to see we're

0:08:41.039,0:08:44.790
going to move that over into the dryer

0:08:42.900,0:08:47.070
window we're looking at this side

0:08:44.790,0:08:48.810
zoom in so you can see I like it right

0:08:47.070,0:08:51.390
there and then we're going to add a

0:08:48.810,0:08:52.770
layer mask to that make sure we go back

0:08:51.390,0:08:54.450
to brush we're going to paint away

0:08:52.770,0:08:56.520
everything we don't want for this

0:08:54.450,0:08:58.770
duplicate photo which is basically just

0:08:56.520,0:09:00.540
about all of it I only want the

0:08:58.770,0:09:02.670
reflection that's in the door make sure

0:09:00.540,0:09:05.090
your opacity up here is all the way at

0:09:02.670,0:09:07.920
100 and then you can paint away

0:09:05.090,0:09:09.720
everything that we don't want which is

0:09:07.920,0:09:11.940
just about everything paint around that

0:09:09.720,0:09:14.730
door only want that photo showing up on

0:09:11.940,0:09:17.430
the glass part or the plastic part of my

0:09:14.730,0:09:21.150
dryer window so let's paint that away

0:09:17.430,0:09:23.190
just about done you can make the opacity

0:09:21.150,0:09:24.930
full again so you can see if you've

0:09:23.190,0:09:27.120
missed anything clearly I did down here

0:09:24.930,0:09:29.640
at the bottom so let's just paint that

0:09:27.120,0:09:32.250
away and when you are confident

0:09:29.640,0:09:33.630
everything is gone we're going to drop

0:09:32.250,0:09:34.920
that opacity because let's be honest

0:09:33.630,0:09:36.420
that doesn't look good

0:09:34.920,0:09:37.890
we want it to look like a reflection

0:09:36.420,0:09:39.420
reflections or faint sometimes

0:09:37.890,0:09:41.640
especially in something like this with

0:09:39.420,0:09:42.840
really really thick glass or plastic so

0:09:41.640,0:09:47.340
were going to drop that a little bit

0:09:42.840,0:09:49.350
more to write about 18% looks good to me

0:09:47.340,0:09:50.790
that's 17 because I don't feel like

0:09:49.350,0:09:52.350
going up one and there we go we got a

0:09:50.790,0:09:54.150
reflection in the door it's subtle

0:09:52.350,0:09:55.680
you don't look there immediately but if

0:09:54.150,0:09:57.150
you keep looking at the photo you notice

0:09:55.680,0:10:00.210
it and you think damn

0:09:57.150,0:10:04.320
that's not us now at this point command

0:10:00.210,0:10:06.840
shift F save this to your desktop title

0:10:04.320,0:10:09.420
it's bamp dryer or whatever you were

0:10:06.840,0:10:11.130
using doesn't matter you want a fresh

0:10:09.420,0:10:12.780
copy of this PSD in case something

0:10:11.130,0:10:16.320
should go wrong we can call back to that

0:10:12.780,0:10:18.150
good to go now for explanation or

0:10:16.320,0:10:19.980
purposes I don't recommend flattening

0:10:18.150,0:10:21.750
layers all the time I recommend working

0:10:19.980,0:10:23.520
through layers and organizing everything

0:10:21.750,0:10:26.280
properly so that at the very end you can

0:10:23.520,0:10:27.960
go back and tweak any spot in that photo

0:10:26.280,0:10:30.780
but for the sake of time we're

0:10:27.960,0:10:32.250
flattening command shift e boop flattens

0:10:30.780,0:10:35.250
everything select that ellipse layer

0:10:32.250,0:10:36.990
goodbye don't need it at this point

0:10:35.250,0:10:38.760
you're done it just kind of comes down

0:10:36.990,0:10:40.080
to color grading so for me I'm gonna use

0:10:38.760,0:10:42.840
one of my left you just go over here to

0:10:40.080,0:10:48.150
adjustments I'm going to select color

0:10:42.840,0:10:50.790
lookup load 3d LUT and come down to load

0:10:48.150,0:10:53.370
3d LUT and come down to Kodak Keeler's

0:10:50.790,0:10:54.600
boop it gives a really really cool tint

0:10:53.370,0:10:56.300
on the photo I'm happy with that

0:10:54.600,0:10:58.850
however I don't

0:10:56.300,0:11:01.340
that tint on the dryer itself I just

0:10:58.850,0:11:03.770
like that in the actual photo of the

0:11:01.340,0:11:05.690
road so I can hit B for brush make sure

0:11:03.770,0:11:08.480
black is selected as the foreground I

0:11:05.690,0:11:10.160
can paint away the effects of that lot

0:11:08.480,0:11:11.690
or that preset or whatever it is that

0:11:10.160,0:11:13.370
you guys are using but I'm only going to

0:11:11.690,0:11:17.150
paint away a little bit of it because I

0:11:13.370,0:11:19.490
like right here my selection here I like

0:11:17.150,0:11:21.320
how a little bit of it shows right here

0:11:19.490,0:11:23.240
but it doesn't really show right here so

0:11:21.320,0:11:26.060
it feels like the photo is glowing out

0:11:23.240,0:11:30.740
of the dryer so go back to brush and

0:11:26.060,0:11:34.760
paint away the rest I do not want good

0:11:30.740,0:11:36.410
to go and I will flatten that happy

0:11:34.760,0:11:38.840
right there actually know what control Z

0:11:36.410,0:11:40.850
said Benny where you live drop that

0:11:38.840,0:11:42.680
opacity a little bit I don't want too

0:11:40.850,0:11:45.200
strong kind of want to put a lot at a

0:11:42.680,0:11:48.620
hundred percent sometimes but C one C

0:11:45.200,0:11:50.300
one generous will go 75 even level 74

0:11:48.620,0:11:52.430
I'm always one-off today it's

0:11:50.300,0:11:53.810
interesting now the last thing I want to

0:11:52.430,0:11:55.580
do that a little bit of warmth a little

0:11:53.810,0:11:57.640
bit punch to this to do that you can

0:11:55.580,0:12:01.100
come over here to image image

0:11:57.640,0:12:03.590
adjustments curves and we can bring

0:12:01.100,0:12:05.630
those blacks down a little bit to bring

0:12:03.590,0:12:08.060
those highlights up so the highlights

0:12:05.630,0:12:09.830
are up top blacks are down below and the

0:12:08.060,0:12:11.840
mid-tones are in the middle when you're

0:12:09.830,0:12:13.310
looking at a curves bar so if we drop

0:12:11.840,0:12:15.560
those blacks down a little bit and bring

0:12:13.310,0:12:17.090
up those highlights that's going to make

0:12:15.560,0:12:20.180
that photo it's just a little more

0:12:17.090,0:12:22.130
punchy you don't have to make it so much

0:12:20.180,0:12:23.540
but just for sake of this explanation

0:12:22.130,0:12:24.740
you can hit preview here to see what

0:12:23.540,0:12:27.530
you've done you can see how I've added

0:12:24.740,0:12:29.150
some contrast happy with that now the

0:12:27.530,0:12:30.890
last thing I want to do is make that

0:12:29.150,0:12:32.960
glow a little more realistic I want it

0:12:30.890,0:12:35.330
to see like the image is in fact coming

0:12:32.960,0:12:37.700
out of my dryer so with the layer

0:12:35.330,0:12:39.350
selected hit command J this is an

0:12:37.700,0:12:40.850
interesting way to do it and my whole

0:12:39.350,0:12:42.890
point with this the whole thing I'm

0:12:40.850,0:12:44.780
trying to do is show you guys different

0:12:42.890,0:12:47.090
tools and different ways to do the same

0:12:44.780,0:12:51.080
things that you have a big range a big

0:12:47.090,0:12:52.970
toolbox of ideas and tips and creativity

0:12:51.080,0:12:54.200
that you can use to do whatever it is

0:12:52.970,0:12:55.970
that you're going to do in Photoshop

0:12:54.200,0:12:59.210
because the more you know the better is

0:12:55.970,0:13:01.130
this the only way to do it no 100% no

0:12:59.210,0:13:02.810
but here's just yet

0:13:01.130,0:13:05.600
another way to do something like this

0:13:02.810,0:13:08.899
with be selected for brush click your

0:13:05.600,0:13:11.240
color picker select something like or in

0:13:08.899,0:13:14.119
you're read we want to show some heat

0:13:11.240,0:13:15.860
coming off this photo hit okay and now

0:13:14.119,0:13:17.660
we're going to do we're going to bring

0:13:15.860,0:13:20.839
that opacity of the brush down a little

0:13:17.660,0:13:23.749
bit up here slow bring that opacity down

0:13:20.839,0:13:26.209
to like 83 and I'm going to paint where

0:13:23.749,0:13:30.860
I want it to look like it is coming out

0:13:26.209,0:13:32.629
and reflecting right here a lot I wanted

0:13:30.860,0:13:35.059
to go all the way around so it looks

0:13:32.629,0:13:37.160
like it's glowing out of this photo and

0:13:35.059,0:13:39.439
I'm going to adjust the opacity again

0:13:37.160,0:13:41.420
because I wanted to slowly dissipate as

0:13:39.439,0:13:44.029
it starts to get further and further

0:13:41.420,0:13:45.649
away from the actual image itself I

0:13:44.029,0:13:48.769
don't want it to be too strong and bring

0:13:45.649,0:13:52.699
that down even more 19 and just kind of

0:13:48.769,0:13:55.040
slowly paint a little bit just like that

0:13:52.699,0:13:57.470
and it's good give a little bit of glow

0:13:55.040,0:13:59.480
up there and cool so now go over to your

0:13:57.470,0:14:02.119
blending modes come all the way down to

0:13:59.480,0:14:03.499
color and oh that looks horrible but

0:14:02.119,0:14:05.660
remember what I said you want to add

0:14:03.499,0:14:07.639
your effects a little bit by a little

0:14:05.660,0:14:10.220
bit so drop that opacity to zero

0:14:07.639,0:14:11.629
and then just slowly start to bring that

0:14:10.220,0:14:14.059
back in but see how it looks like

0:14:11.629,0:14:16.189
there's a reflection of light coming

0:14:14.059,0:14:17.990
through that that's making that right

0:14:16.189,0:14:23.420
side glow if you go too far it doesn't

0:14:17.990,0:14:25.519
work but just just a little bit bit boom

0:14:23.420,0:14:27.459
right there so it looks like the light

0:14:25.519,0:14:29.689
is kind of leaking out of this photo

0:14:27.459,0:14:32.360
into the dryer I'm happy with that

0:14:29.689,0:14:34.279
you can further correct it I crunch this

0:14:32.360,0:14:36.470
a little bit more I kind of took my time

0:14:34.279,0:14:39.649
with that you can use the curves up here

0:14:36.470,0:14:42.439
image adjustments curves and you can go

0:14:39.649,0:14:44.480
over to the channel select red and you

0:14:42.439,0:14:46.610
can adjust just the red using this

0:14:44.480,0:14:48.589
curves if you want more that way if you

0:14:46.610,0:14:50.749
want less that way and you can play with

0:14:48.589,0:14:52.220
these on different layers to get exactly

0:14:50.749,0:14:53.509
what you want so you can tweak that as

0:14:52.220,0:14:55.639
much as you want I went a little bit

0:14:53.509,0:14:56.839
further here and I really accentuated

0:14:55.639,0:14:59.089
the yellows and painting different

0:14:56.839,0:15:00.259
layers and I just did that process that

0:14:59.089,0:15:03.499
we just did with the orange there

0:15:00.259,0:15:05.299
several times up above below so that it

0:15:03.499,0:15:07.549
really looked like the Sun was baking

0:15:05.299,0:15:10.569
through on this so that is my final

0:15:07.549,0:15:14.720
result let's go full screen there and

0:15:10.569,0:15:16.790
OOP there you have it that's pretty cool

0:15:14.720,0:15:18.709
so there it is now you know how to make

0:15:16.790,0:15:19.730
some cool-looking composites and if you

0:15:18.709,0:15:22.129
guys want I will

0:15:19.730,0:15:23.779
continue doing abstract photo tutorials

0:15:22.129,0:15:25.009
like this to present you guys with

0:15:23.779,0:15:25.519
different ideas that I think might be

0:15:25.009,0:15:26.600
cool

0:15:25.519,0:15:28.249
I'd love to know what you guys think of

0:15:26.600,0:15:30.499
the series itself and if you have any

0:15:28.249,0:15:32.329
ideas for your own comics let's start

0:15:30.499,0:15:34.249
that discussion below but as always

0:15:32.329,0:15:35.419
thank you so much for watching hit that

0:15:34.249,0:15:37.279
like button if you got something out of

0:15:35.419,0:15:40.939
this video and you enjoyed it subscribe

0:15:37.279,0:15:43.399
if you aren't already and and I will see

0:15:40.939,0:15:44.779
you guys in the next video I'm supposed

0:15:43.399,0:15:46.459
to take my hat off at this point but

0:15:44.779,0:15:52.519
you're so far away I'd have to like I

0:15:46.459,0:15:56.019
have to like run it up go get warmed up

0:15:52.519,0:15:56.019
gotta get warmed up got to get warmed up

0:15:59.259,0:16:04.569
pretty copyleft in this little bit hmm

Default

1
00:00:00,264 --> 00:00:02,541
- What's up, everybody, Peter
McKinnon here, and today,

2
00:00:02,541 --> 00:00:05,275
we're talking about how you
can take photos like this

3
00:00:05,275 --> 00:00:07,731
and turn them into this,
by creating your own

4
00:00:07,731 --> 00:00:11,374
Fantasy Composite Photos in Photoshop.

5
00:00:11,374 --> 00:00:13,866
And whoo, does it look badass.

6
00:00:13,866 --> 00:00:16,832
Pow, almost hit myself
in the face on that one.

7
00:00:16,832 --> 00:00:17,665
Intro!

8
00:00:17,665 --> 00:00:20,665
(upbeat rock music)

9
00:00:22,939 --> 00:00:25,832
Whoa, okay, you might be asking yourself,

10
00:00:25,832 --> 00:00:27,059
Pete, what's a composite?

11
00:00:27,059 --> 00:00:29,676
And I would say to you,
imagine a beautiful yacht

12
00:00:29,676 --> 00:00:31,312
in the middle of the ocean.

13
00:00:31,312 --> 00:00:33,042
Two chicks are on the edge of that yacht,

14
00:00:33,042 --> 00:00:35,871
sipping champagne, there's
a flock of birds above,

15
00:00:35,871 --> 00:00:38,682
some dude is perfect
mid-Pocahontas swan dive

16
00:00:38,682 --> 00:00:41,590
off the tail end, there's a
couple scuba diving below,

17
00:00:41,590 --> 00:00:44,440
surrounded by a beautiful,
colorful school of fish,

18
00:00:44,440 --> 00:00:47,906
a shark in the distance, and
you say to yourself, how?

19
00:00:47,906 --> 00:00:49,690
How could that picture be taken?

20
00:00:49,690 --> 00:00:52,403
Well, I will tell you how, chances are,

21
00:00:52,403 --> 00:00:54,861
it was taken in several different stages.

22
00:00:54,861 --> 00:00:56,624
The chicks were taken separately,

23
00:00:56,624 --> 00:00:58,390
the dude swan diving was separate,

24
00:00:58,390 --> 00:01:01,451
the birds added in post,
the fish added in post,

25
00:01:01,451 --> 00:01:04,249
maybe taken separately,
but the main point is,

26
00:01:04,249 --> 00:01:07,041
all of these items were
taken and put together

27
00:01:07,041 --> 00:01:08,910
into what's called a composite image.

28
00:01:08,910 --> 00:01:11,953
Now, why I call this Fantasy
composites is because

29
00:01:11,953 --> 00:01:14,200
if you think about it, that yacht scenario

30
00:01:14,200 --> 00:01:16,215
could very well happen,
you look at that shot,

31
00:01:16,215 --> 00:01:18,488
and you're like, cool, yacht
party, that's a good photo.

32
00:01:18,488 --> 00:01:19,578
They did that very well.

33
00:01:19,578 --> 00:01:23,372
However, Banff National Park
coming out of your dryer

34
00:01:23,372 --> 00:01:26,539
is not possible, and
that is why I love it.

35
00:01:26,539 --> 00:01:28,275
Because you're presenting
someone with something

36
00:01:28,275 --> 00:01:30,790
that they have never
seen before, and maybe

37
00:01:30,790 --> 00:01:33,321
would never have thought
of ever being able to see.

38
00:01:33,321 --> 00:01:34,935
You're just creating this brand-new thing.

39
00:01:34,935 --> 00:01:36,863
It's like the first time
you saw a light saber,

40
00:01:36,863 --> 00:01:39,729
and you were like, whoa,
why doesn't that exist?

41
00:01:39,729 --> 00:01:42,235
That's the coolest thing
ever, cheers, George.

42
00:01:42,235 --> 00:01:44,235
The key is just looking
at things differently.

43
00:01:44,235 --> 00:01:45,860
We walk by our dryers every day,

44
00:01:45,860 --> 00:01:47,108
we open the fridge every day,

45
00:01:47,108 --> 00:01:49,489
you put dogfood in the dog bowl every day.

46
00:01:49,489 --> 00:01:51,718
These are all potential
photo opportunities

47
00:01:51,718 --> 00:01:54,770
that we can create these
abstract composites from,

48
00:01:54,770 --> 00:01:57,609
using photos that we already
have in our archives.

49
00:01:57,609 --> 00:01:59,282
I took that shot in Banff like,

50
00:01:59,282 --> 00:02:01,155
a year and a half to two years ago,

51
00:02:01,155 --> 00:02:03,246
and now I'm able to fuse
these two things together

52
00:02:03,246 --> 00:02:04,659
to create something brand-new

53
00:02:04,659 --> 00:02:06,816
that's a visually stunning piece of art.

54
00:02:06,816 --> 00:02:08,552
So I think I'm gonna start
a new series on this,

55
00:02:08,552 --> 00:02:10,903
kind of like an abstract
photography series

56
00:02:10,903 --> 00:02:13,019
on how we can creatively think

57
00:02:13,019 --> 00:02:14,525
and come up with different ways

58
00:02:14,525 --> 00:02:16,721
to Photoshop and
manipulate every day items

59
00:02:16,721 --> 00:02:20,197
or just creative ways to
shoot and display our photos.

60
00:02:20,197 --> 00:02:21,569
If you guys like that idea

61
00:02:21,569 --> 00:02:24,046
and want to see more
of this type of thing,

62
00:02:24,046 --> 00:02:26,661
let me know below, I'd
love to hear your thoughts.

63
00:02:26,661 --> 00:02:28,254
But, with that being said,

64
00:02:28,254 --> 00:02:30,508
let's jump into how to actually do this,

65
00:02:30,508 --> 00:02:32,098
because it's a lot easier than you think.

66
00:02:32,098 --> 00:02:33,769
But before we jump into
it, I want to say thanks

67
00:02:33,769 --> 00:02:35,358
to our sponsor for today's tutorial,

68
00:02:35,358 --> 00:02:37,525
which are the good folks
over at Squarespace,

69
00:02:37,525 --> 00:02:39,786
and if you need a website, which you do,

70
00:02:39,786 --> 00:02:41,282
if you're an artist at all,

71
00:02:41,282 --> 00:02:43,067
you need somewhere to send people,

72
00:02:43,067 --> 00:02:46,266
a portfolio, a store, a blog,
it doesn't matter what it is,

73
00:02:46,266 --> 00:02:47,651
it's an all-in-one platform

74
00:02:47,651 --> 00:02:49,120
where everything's taken care of for you.

75
00:02:49,120 --> 00:02:51,226

anything, patch, upgrade,

76
00:02:51,226 --> 00:02:53,600
none of that, I've been using
them myself for five years,

77
00:02:53,600 --> 00:02:55,775
the wife uses them, the
whole family's set up.

78
00:02:55,775 --> 00:02:58,802
Tons of award-winning designer
templates to choose from.

79
00:02:58,802 --> 00:03:00,233
So, something for everybody.

80
00:03:00,233 --> 00:03:02,003

81
00:03:02,003 --> 00:03:04,534
so if you ever get stuck,
they've got your back.

82
00:03:04,534 --> 00:03:06,936
Get your domain set up
and just get online.

83
00:03:06,936 --> 00:03:09,477
Head over to squarespace.com/mckinnon,

84
00:03:09,477 --> 00:03:11,088
enter code MCKINNON at check-out,

85
00:03:11,088 --> 00:03:12,717
and save yourself 10% off.

86
00:03:12,717 --> 00:03:16,386
So, bo, done, save some
money, get yourself a website.

87
00:03:16,386 --> 00:03:19,349
And grab your computer,
sit down at your desk,

88
00:03:19,349 --> 00:03:22,067
open up your phone, turn
it landscape, whatever,

89
00:03:22,067 --> 00:03:24,617
put your headphones in,
take them out, let's go.

90
00:03:24,617 --> 00:03:26,178
Okay, once you have your photo,

91
00:03:26,178 --> 00:03:27,581
whatever it is that you're gonna use,

92
00:03:27,581 --> 00:03:28,977
I'm using a dryer in this instance,

93
00:03:28,977 --> 00:03:31,071
you can use a microwave,
you can use the fridge,

94
00:03:31,071 --> 00:03:33,093
you could use your closet,
whatever, the toilet,

95
00:03:33,093 --> 00:03:34,944
you could use the toilet if you wanted to.

96
00:03:34,944 --> 00:03:37,173
But something that
opens for this instance.

97
00:03:37,173 --> 00:03:38,572
If you want to follow along the best,

98
00:03:38,572 --> 00:03:41,041
it might be easier to
use your dryer as well.

99
00:03:41,041 --> 00:03:43,152
So once you've taken that
photo, bring it into Photoshop,

100
00:03:43,152 --> 00:03:44,660
it's gonna open up Camera Raw.

101
00:03:44,660 --> 00:03:46,361
I've already done a couple tweaks to it,

102
00:03:46,361 --> 00:03:47,969
and when you're happy with the exposure,

103
00:03:47,969 --> 00:03:49,381
I wanna make mine a little more blue,

104
00:03:49,381 --> 00:03:52,525
and I'll tell you guys why
at the end of this tutorial.

105
00:03:52,525 --> 00:03:54,070
Just go ahead and hit Open Image,

106
00:03:54,070 --> 00:03:56,171
and you should be good to go.

107
00:03:56,171 --> 00:03:58,316
Now, from this point, we're
gonna do a couple things.

108
00:03:58,316 --> 00:04:00,600
We're just gonna hit Command
+ J on that background,

109
00:04:00,600 --> 00:04:02,082
which is gonna duplicate it,

110
00:04:02,082 --> 00:04:03,639
and we're gonna drag that background there

111
00:04:03,639 --> 00:04:05,081
to the Garbage, just 'cause it's locked,

112
00:04:05,081 --> 00:04:06,876
and we just want access.

113
00:04:06,876 --> 00:04:08,788
Double-click on that, and name it Dryer,

114
00:04:08,788 --> 00:04:12,096
that way, we can keep
things nice and tidy here.

115
00:04:12,096 --> 00:04:13,455
And then we're gonna drag in the photo

116
00:04:13,455 --> 00:04:16,397
that you're gonna use to
make come out of the dryer,

117
00:04:16,397 --> 00:04:18,550
we're gonna use to make that Narnia,

118
00:04:18,550 --> 00:04:20,057
fantasy kind of thing here.

119
00:04:20,057 --> 00:04:22,572
So once you get the photo
open, hit Command + A,

120
00:04:22,572 --> 00:04:25,006
it's gonna select all
of it, hit Command + C,

121
00:04:25,006 --> 00:04:27,584
that's copying it, Command + W closes it,

122
00:04:27,584 --> 00:04:31,522
Command + V pastes it, hit OK, good to go.

123
00:04:31,522 --> 00:04:33,807
Make sure that layer is on the bottom,

124
00:04:33,807 --> 00:04:36,089
and we're gonna name that, Banff,

125
00:04:36,089 --> 00:04:38,731
that's Banff National Park, so
we'll leave that right there.

126
00:04:38,731 --> 00:04:40,942
Now, it's important to say, the
photo that you're gonna use,

127
00:04:40,942 --> 00:04:43,364
the two photos, need
to work well together.

128
00:04:43,364 --> 00:04:45,323
If you don't have a photo that works well,

129
00:04:45,323 --> 00:04:47,400
it's gonna be hard to do,
as an example of that,

130
00:04:47,400 --> 00:04:50,749
I did one earlier that
just didn't look as good

131
00:04:50,749 --> 00:04:53,125
of the snow coming out of the dryer,

132
00:04:53,125 --> 00:04:54,288
and I tried to kind of make it,

133
00:04:54,288 --> 00:04:56,087
it just wasn't really working for me,

134
00:04:56,087 --> 00:04:57,827
so then I moved on to a different shot,

135
00:04:57,827 --> 00:05:00,797
which is this road shot,
and woo, works way better.

136
00:05:00,797 --> 00:05:03,314
So take it from me, you
gotta have two images

137
00:05:03,314 --> 00:05:05,902
that compliment each other that work well

138
00:05:05,902 --> 00:05:07,144
to get the best result.

139
00:05:07,144 --> 00:05:08,496
The reason this one works so well

140
00:05:08,496 --> 00:05:10,590
is 'cause we got those
leading lines of the road

141
00:05:10,590 --> 00:05:13,835
that diminishes deep into
the dryer that looks also,

142
00:05:13,835 --> 00:05:16,288
when you reverse that, like
it's coming out of the dryer,

143
00:05:16,288 --> 00:05:19,824
so they're just two shots that
compliment each other well.

144
00:05:19,824 --> 00:05:22,448
So at this point, we just want to make a,

145
00:05:22,448 --> 00:05:24,244
we're gonna reset our colors down here,

146
00:05:24,244 --> 00:05:26,608
by hitting X and D, that resets them.

147
00:05:26,608 --> 00:05:28,065
Make sure your foreground is white,

148
00:05:28,065 --> 00:05:29,354
you can hit X to do that.

149
00:05:29,354 --> 00:05:31,239
And then come down to the Ellipse tool,

150
00:05:31,239 --> 00:05:33,596
and we're gonna drag a perfect
circle by holding Shift

151
00:05:33,596 --> 00:05:36,737
and dragging to around the
size you think that opening is

152
00:05:36,737 --> 00:05:39,323
in the dryer, and then when you're happy,

153
00:05:39,323 --> 00:05:42,570
move that to the top layer,
so that we can see it,

154
00:05:42,570 --> 00:05:44,303
and then move it into place.

155
00:05:44,303 --> 00:05:46,535
To get the best result, drop that opacity,

156
00:05:46,535 --> 00:05:47,789
so you can see exactly where it is.

157
00:05:47,789 --> 00:05:49,983
Now I can see that's overlapping,
it's a little too big.

158
00:05:49,983 --> 00:05:52,615
So Control + T brings up the sizing box,

159
00:05:52,615 --> 00:05:56,793
and you can size that down
to the appropriate size.

160
00:05:56,793 --> 00:05:59,089
Hit V to get back to your Move tool,

161
00:05:59,089 --> 00:06:01,283
and then just position
to where you want it.

162
00:06:01,283 --> 00:06:03,667
I could maybe use it
just ever so slightly,

163
00:06:03,667 --> 00:06:07,419
a little bit smaller, right
there, and then move that over

164
00:06:07,419 --> 00:06:10,986
and boop, good to go, you can
bring that Opacity back up.

165
00:06:10,986 --> 00:06:14,149
Now, while you are still
clicked on that highlighted,

166
00:06:14,149 --> 00:06:16,212
hold Command and click the layer again.

167
00:06:16,212 --> 00:06:18,466
That makes it into a
selection, so we can come down

168
00:06:18,466 --> 00:06:20,459
to the dryer layer, click that once,

169
00:06:20,459 --> 00:06:24,426
and then come down here to
the bottom, Add Layer Mask.

170
00:06:24,426 --> 00:06:27,400
Don't do anything yet, don't
hit anything, hands off.

171
00:06:27,400 --> 00:06:30,607
Hit Command + I, that inverts it, and now,

172
00:06:30,607 --> 00:06:31,946
we're just about good to go.

173
00:06:31,946 --> 00:06:34,842
You can go up to the
Ellipse layer and hide it,

174
00:06:34,842 --> 00:06:38,180
which, voila, shows us
the Banff road underneath.

175
00:06:38,180 --> 00:06:39,934
Essentially, we've just
punched a hole in that photo,

176
00:06:39,934 --> 00:06:41,003
kind of like we talked about

177
00:06:41,003 --> 00:06:44,028
in the How to Fake Anything
in Your Photos tutorial.

178
00:06:44,028 --> 00:06:46,010
So we clicked that bottom
layer, the Banff layer,

179
00:06:46,010 --> 00:06:49,192
we can actually move that
around wherever we want.

180
00:06:49,192 --> 00:06:52,081
So I am just going to move it here,

181
00:06:52,081 --> 00:06:53,225
I want to see move of the mountains.

182
00:06:53,225 --> 00:06:55,252
I'm happy with that, that looks good.

183
00:06:55,252 --> 00:06:56,660
Go back up to the Dryer layer,

184
00:06:56,660 --> 00:06:58,691
and then we're gonna
drop the Opacity on that

185
00:06:58,691 --> 00:07:00,039
so we can see the road.

186
00:07:00,039 --> 00:07:02,202
Now I know a lot of you
people in that past tutorials

187
00:07:02,202 --> 00:07:04,190
were like why aren't
you using the Pen tool?

188
00:07:04,190 --> 00:07:07,404
Use the Pen tool, what's
wrong with you, Pen tool!

189
00:07:07,404 --> 00:07:09,971
Don't use an Ellipse,
but in this instance,

190
00:07:09,971 --> 00:07:11,204
I just need a perfect circle,

191
00:07:11,204 --> 00:07:14,463
and an Ellipse gives me a
perfect circle, so done.

192
00:07:14,463 --> 00:07:16,724
Now in this instance, I
want to cut out the road,

193
00:07:16,724 --> 00:07:18,377
I want to cut out those leading lines,

194
00:07:18,377 --> 00:07:19,990
I'm gonna use the Pen tool.

195
00:07:19,990 --> 00:07:21,884
So come on over here, click the Pen tool,

196
00:07:21,884 --> 00:07:24,211
it's right above the T for text.

197
00:07:24,211 --> 00:07:26,146
Come back over to the photo,
and this what I'm gonna do,

198
00:07:26,146 --> 00:07:28,019
I'm gonna click on one part of the road

199
00:07:28,019 --> 00:07:29,888
that is in the dryer, if you will,

200
00:07:29,888 --> 00:07:32,147
and I'm gonna come all the way over,

201
00:07:32,147 --> 00:07:33,565
off frame, and click again.

202
00:07:33,565 --> 00:07:36,052
I've just basically made
myself a guide, a line.

203
00:07:36,052 --> 00:07:37,820
I'm gonna go all the way over

204
00:07:37,820 --> 00:07:39,863
around the borders of the photo

205
00:07:39,863 --> 00:07:42,375
I'm gonna click back here, so
that we're back on that line,

206
00:07:42,375 --> 00:07:44,250
and then I'm gonna click inside the dryer,

207
00:07:44,250 --> 00:07:45,808
so we've just cut that out,

208
00:07:45,808 --> 00:07:48,379
and connect where I
started at the beginning.

209
00:07:48,379 --> 00:07:51,021
To make this a selection,
hold Control and click,

210
00:07:51,021 --> 00:07:53,738
or right-click, right-click there,

211
00:07:53,738 --> 00:07:57,462
and select Make Selection
and then just hit OK.

212
00:07:57,462 --> 00:07:59,422
So that whole thing is selected now.

213
00:07:59,422 --> 00:08:02,239
And now what you want to do is go over

214
00:08:02,239 --> 00:08:06,975
to the Mask on that Dryer
layer, and hit Option Delete.

215
00:08:06,975 --> 00:08:09,862
And essentially, we just masked
out the rest of that road

216
00:08:09,862 --> 00:08:12,110
that we selected with the Pen tool.

217
00:08:12,110 --> 00:08:13,988
From this point, you can hit Command + D,

218
00:08:13,988 --> 00:08:15,245
that deselects everything,

219
00:08:15,245 --> 00:08:17,503
and then we can drag that Opacity back up,

220
00:08:17,503 --> 00:08:21,307
and boom, Banff is now coming
out of your dryer, what?

221
00:08:21,307 --> 00:08:22,890
And we're almost done at this point.

222
00:08:22,890 --> 00:08:25,272
All we wanna do is,
duplicate that Banff layer

223
00:08:25,272 --> 00:08:28,130
because I want to make a
reflection in the dryer door.

224
00:08:28,130 --> 00:08:31,445
So drag that to the top, hit Command + T,

225
00:08:31,445 --> 00:08:33,625
and then right-click or Control + click,

226
00:08:33,625 --> 00:08:37,980
and hit Flip Horizontal, and
then drop the Opacity on that

227
00:08:37,980 --> 00:08:39,906
because we want to move this over,

228
00:08:39,906 --> 00:08:41,265
and it's a little bit hard to see,

229
00:08:41,265 --> 00:08:43,655
but we're gonna move that
over into the dryer window,

230
00:08:43,655 --> 00:08:45,084
we're looking at this side here,

231
00:08:45,084 --> 00:08:48,203
I'll zoom in so you can
see, I like it right there.

232
00:08:48,203 --> 00:08:50,804
And then we're gonna add
a Layer Mask to that,

233
00:08:50,804 --> 00:08:53,001
make sure we go back to Brush,
and we're gonna paint away

234
00:08:53,001 --> 00:08:55,863
everything we don't want
for this duplicate photo,

235
00:08:55,863 --> 00:08:57,958
which is basically just about all of it.

236
00:08:57,958 --> 00:09:00,424
I only want the reflection
that's in the door.

237
00:09:00,424 --> 00:09:03,706
But make sure your Opacity, up
here, is all the way at 100.

238
00:09:03,706 --> 00:09:07,853
And then you can paint away
everything that we don't want,

239
00:09:07,853 --> 00:09:10,207
which is just about everything,
paint around that door.

240
00:09:10,207 --> 00:09:13,589
I only want that photo
showing up on the glass part

241
00:09:13,589 --> 00:09:16,553
or the plastic part of my dryer window.

242
00:09:16,553 --> 00:09:20,091
So let's paint that away, just about done.

243
00:09:20,091 --> 00:09:22,550
You can make the Opacity full again,

244
00:09:22,550 --> 00:09:24,117
so you can see if you've missed anything.

245
00:09:24,117 --> 00:09:25,776
Clearly, I did, down here at the bottom,

246
00:09:25,776 --> 00:09:28,017
so let's just paint that away.

247
00:09:28,017 --> 00:09:31,987
And when you are confident
that everything is gone,

248
00:09:31,987 --> 00:09:33,132
we're gonna drop that Opacity,

249
00:09:33,132 --> 00:09:35,211
because let's be honest,
that doesn't look good.

250
00:09:35,211 --> 00:09:36,815
We want it to look like a reflection,

251
00:09:36,815 --> 00:09:38,317
and reflections are faint sometimes,

252
00:09:38,317 --> 00:09:39,529
especially in something like this,

253
00:09:39,529 --> 00:09:41,706
with really, really
thick glass or plastic.

254
00:09:41,706 --> 00:09:43,791
So we're gonna drop
that a little bit more,

255
00:09:43,791 --> 00:09:47,789
to right about there,
18% looks good to me,

256
00:09:47,789 --> 00:09:50,397
but 17, because I don't
feel like going up one.

257
00:09:50,397 --> 00:09:51,867
And there we go, we got
a reflection in the door,

258
00:09:51,867 --> 00:09:54,074
it's subtle, you don't
look there immediately,

259
00:09:54,074 --> 00:09:56,030
but if you keep looking at
the photo, you notice it,

260
00:09:56,030 --> 00:09:58,947
and you think, damn, that's badass.

261
00:09:58,947 --> 00:10:02,302
Now at this point, Command + Shift + S,

262
00:10:02,302 --> 00:10:06,037
save this to your desktop,
title it Banff Dryer,

263
00:10:06,037 --> 00:10:08,811
or whatever you were
using, it doesn't matter.

264
00:10:08,811 --> 00:10:10,746
We just want a fresh copy of this PSD

265
00:10:10,746 --> 00:10:13,426
in case something should go
wrong, we can call back to that.

266
00:10:13,426 --> 00:10:14,868
Good to go.

267
00:10:14,868 --> 00:10:16,986
Now, for explanational purposes,

268
00:10:16,986 --> 00:10:19,240
I don't recommend flattening
layers all the time.

269
00:10:19,240 --> 00:10:21,039
I recommend working through layers

270
00:10:21,039 --> 00:10:22,534
and organizing everything properly,

271
00:10:22,534 --> 00:10:25,568
so that at the very end, you
can go back and tweak any spot

272
00:10:25,568 --> 00:10:29,107
in that photo, but for the
sake of time, we're flattening.

273
00:10:29,107 --> 00:10:31,487
Command + Shift + E,
boop, flattens everything.

274
00:10:31,487 --> 00:10:34,941
Select that Ellipse layer,
good bye, don't need it.

275
00:10:34,941 --> 00:10:37,312
At this point, you're done,
it just kind of comes down

276
00:10:37,312 --> 00:10:39,830
to color grading, so for me,
I'm gonna use one of my LUTs.

277
00:10:39,830 --> 00:10:42,054
And just go over here to Adjustments,

278
00:10:42,054 --> 00:10:45,574
we're gonna select Color
Lookup, Load 3D LUT,

279
00:10:45,574 --> 00:10:47,991
and come down to Load 3D LUT,

280
00:10:49,100 --> 00:10:52,023
and come down to Kodak Killer, boop.

281
00:10:52,023 --> 00:10:54,052
That gives a really, really
cool tint on the photo.

282
00:10:54,052 --> 00:10:55,546
I'm happy with that.

283
00:10:55,546 --> 00:10:58,731
However, I don't want that
tint on the dryer itself,

284
00:10:58,731 --> 00:11:01,965
I just like that in the
actual photo of the road,

285
00:11:01,965 --> 00:11:03,694
so I can hit B for Brush,

286
00:11:03,694 --> 00:11:05,698
make sure black is
selected as the foreground,

287
00:11:05,698 --> 00:11:09,615
and I can paint away the effects
of the LUT or that preset

288
00:11:09,615 --> 00:11:11,206
or whatever it is that you guys are using.

289
00:11:11,206 --> 00:11:13,171
But I'm only gonna paint
away a little bit of it,

290
00:11:13,171 --> 00:11:16,941
because I like right
here, my selection here,

291
00:11:16,941 --> 00:11:19,798
I like how a little bit
of it shows right here,

292
00:11:19,798 --> 00:11:21,290
but it doesn't really show right here.

293
00:11:21,290 --> 00:11:25,228
So it feels like the photo
is glowing out of the dryer.

294
00:11:25,228 --> 00:11:29,395
So go back to Brush, paint away
the rest that I do not want.

295
00:11:30,743 --> 00:11:31,660
Good to go.

296
00:11:32,539 --> 00:11:35,284
And I will flatten
that, happy right there.

297
00:11:35,284 --> 00:11:37,344
Actually, you know
what, let's Control + Z,

298
00:11:37,344 --> 00:11:39,008
Zed depending where you live.

299
00:11:39,008 --> 00:11:41,826
Drop that Opacity a little bit,
I don't want it too strong,

300
00:11:41,826 --> 00:11:44,248
I never want to put a lot
at 100%, sometimes I do,

301
00:11:44,248 --> 00:11:48,885
but I'm feeling generous, we'll
go 75, even though it's 74.

302
00:11:48,885 --> 00:11:51,698
I'm always one off
today, it's interesting.

303
00:11:51,698 --> 00:11:53,822
Now the last thing I wanna do
is add a little bit of warmth,

304
00:11:53,822 --> 00:11:55,067
a little bit of punch to this.

305
00:11:55,067 --> 00:11:57,455
To do that, you can
come over here to Image,

306
00:11:57,455 --> 00:12:00,413
Image, Adjustments, Curves,

307
00:12:00,413 --> 00:12:02,700
and we can bring those
blacks down a little bit

308
00:12:02,700 --> 00:12:05,353
to bring those highlights up.

309
00:12:05,353 --> 00:12:07,971
So the highlights are up
top, blacks are down below,

310
00:12:07,971 --> 00:12:09,847
and the mid-tones are in the middle,

311
00:12:09,847 --> 00:12:11,815
when you're looking at a Curves bar.

312
00:12:11,815 --> 00:12:13,294
So if we drop those
blacks down a little bit,

313
00:12:13,294 --> 00:12:15,183
and bring up those highlights,

314
00:12:15,183 --> 00:12:18,585
that's gonna make that photo
look just a little more punchy,

315
00:12:18,585 --> 00:12:20,383
you don't have to make it so much,

316
00:12:20,383 --> 00:12:22,268
but just for the sake of this explanation,

317
00:12:22,268 --> 00:12:24,492
you can hit Preview here
to see what you've done.

318
00:12:24,492 --> 00:12:26,061
You can see how I've added some Contrast.

319
00:12:26,061 --> 00:12:27,542
I'm happy with that, boop.

320
00:12:27,542 --> 00:12:29,186
Now the last thing I wanna do is

321
00:12:29,186 --> 00:12:30,824
make that glow a little more realistic,

322
00:12:30,824 --> 00:12:32,276
I want it to feel like the image

323
00:12:32,276 --> 00:12:34,490
is in fact coming out of my dryer.

324
00:12:34,490 --> 00:12:37,513
So with the layer
selected, hit Command + J,

325
00:12:37,513 --> 00:12:39,029
this is an interesting way to do it.

326
00:12:39,029 --> 00:12:40,459
And my whole point with this,

327
00:12:40,459 --> 00:12:41,898
the whole thing I'm trying to do

328
00:12:41,898 --> 00:12:44,203
is show you guys different
tools and different ways

329
00:12:44,203 --> 00:12:46,842
to do the same things,
that you have a big range,

330
00:12:46,842 --> 00:12:51,083
a big toolbox of ideas
and tips and creativity

331
00:12:51,083 --> 00:12:53,070
that you can use to do whatever it is

332
00:12:53,070 --> 00:12:54,716
that you're gonna do in Photoshop.

333
00:12:54,716 --> 00:12:56,434
'Cause the more you know, the better.

334
00:12:56,434 --> 00:12:59,837
Is this the only way
to do it, no, 100% no.

335
00:12:59,837 --> 00:13:03,646
But here's just yet another
way to do something like this.

336
00:13:03,646 --> 00:13:06,914
With B selected for Brush,
click your Color Picker,

337
00:13:06,914 --> 00:13:10,052
select something like orange or red,

338
00:13:10,052 --> 00:13:12,443
'cause we want to show some
heat coming off this photo.

339
00:13:12,443 --> 00:13:15,663
Hit OK, and now what we're gonna do,

340
00:13:15,663 --> 00:13:17,647
we're gonna bring that
Opacity of the Brush

341
00:13:17,647 --> 00:13:20,163
down a little bit up here, that's flow.

342
00:13:20,163 --> 00:13:22,402
Bring that Opacity down to like 83,

343
00:13:22,402 --> 00:13:25,290
and I'm gonna paint where
I want it to look like

344
00:13:25,290 --> 00:13:29,457
it is coming out and
reflecting right here, a lot.

345
00:13:30,791 --> 00:13:32,497
I want it to go all the way around

346
00:13:32,497 --> 00:13:35,469
so it looks like it's
glowing out of this photo.

347
00:13:35,469 --> 00:13:37,827
And then I'm gonna
adjust the Opacity again,

348
00:13:37,827 --> 00:13:39,909
'cause I want it to slowly dissipate

349
00:13:39,909 --> 00:13:42,068
as it starts to get
further and further away

350
00:13:42,068 --> 00:13:44,107
from the actual image itself.

351
00:13:44,107 --> 00:13:45,482
I don't want it to be too strong,

352
00:13:45,482 --> 00:13:48,170
I'm gonna bring that down even more, 19,

353
00:13:48,170 --> 00:13:52,570
and just kind of slowly
paint a little bit,

354
00:13:52,570 --> 00:13:54,502
just like that, looks good,

355
00:13:54,502 --> 00:13:56,715
give it a little bit of
glow up there, and cool.

356
00:13:56,715 --> 00:13:58,857
So, now go over to your Blending Modes,

357
00:13:58,857 --> 00:14:00,669
come all the way down to Color,

358
00:14:00,669 --> 00:14:02,278
and whoa, that looks horrible.

359
00:14:02,278 --> 00:14:04,675
But remember what I said,
we want to add your effects

360
00:14:04,675 --> 00:14:08,258
a little bit by little bit,
so drop that Opacity to zero,

361
00:14:08,258 --> 00:14:10,780
and then just slowly start
to bring that back in.

362
00:14:10,780 --> 00:14:13,959
But see how it looks like
there's a reflection of light

363
00:14:13,959 --> 00:14:17,022
coming through that's
making that right side glow.

364
00:14:17,022 --> 00:14:18,518
If you go too far, it doesn't work.

365
00:14:18,518 --> 00:14:20,351
But just a little bit,

366
00:14:21,328 --> 00:14:24,487
just a little bit, boom, right there.

367
00:14:24,487 --> 00:14:26,851
So it looks like the
light is kind of leaking

368
00:14:26,851 --> 00:14:29,161
out of this photo into the dryer.

369
00:14:29,161 --> 00:14:30,509
I'm happy with that.

370
00:14:30,509 --> 00:14:31,912
You can further correct it.

371
00:14:31,912 --> 00:14:33,371
I crunched this a little bit more,

372
00:14:33,371 --> 00:14:35,182
I kind of took my time with that.

373
00:14:35,182 --> 00:14:39,202
You can use the Curves up here,
Image, Adjustments, Curves,

374
00:14:39,202 --> 00:14:42,392
and you can go over to
the Channel, select Red,

375
00:14:42,392 --> 00:14:45,232
and you can adjust just
the reds using this Curves.

376
00:14:45,232 --> 00:14:48,255
If you want more, that way,
if you want it less, that way.

377
00:14:48,255 --> 00:14:50,093
And you can play with
these on different layers

378
00:14:50,093 --> 00:14:51,568
to get exactly what you want.

379
00:14:51,568 --> 00:14:53,337
So you can tweak that as much as you want.

380
00:14:53,337 --> 00:14:54,770
I went a little bit further here,

381
00:14:54,770 --> 00:14:56,399
and I really accentuated the yellows

382
00:14:56,399 --> 00:14:59,127
and painting different layers,
and I just did that process

383
00:14:59,127 --> 00:15:01,784
that we just did with
orange there several times

384
00:15:01,784 --> 00:15:04,772
up above, below, so that it
really looked like the sun

385
00:15:04,772 --> 00:15:06,163
was baking through on this.

386
00:15:06,163 --> 00:15:09,095
So that is my final results.

387
00:15:09,095 --> 00:15:12,892
Let's go full-screen there, and boop.

388
00:15:12,892 --> 00:15:15,096
There you have it, that's pretty cool.

389
00:15:15,096 --> 00:15:16,714
So there it is, now you know

390
00:15:16,714 --> 00:15:18,579
how to make some cool-looking composites.

391
00:15:18,579 --> 00:15:20,883
And if you guys want,
I will continue doing

392
00:15:20,883 --> 00:15:22,957
abstract photo tutorials like this

393
00:15:22,957 --> 00:15:24,599
to present you guys with different ideas

394
00:15:24,599 --> 00:15:25,778
that I think might be cool.

395
00:15:25,778 --> 00:15:27,835
I'd love to know what you guys
think of this series itself,

396
00:15:27,835 --> 00:15:30,301
and if you have any ideas
for your own composites,

397
00:15:30,301 --> 00:15:32,037
let's start that discussion below.

398
00:15:32,037 --> 00:15:34,122
But as always, thank you
so much for watching.

399
00:15:34,122 --> 00:15:35,326
Hit that Like button

400
00:15:35,326 --> 00:15:37,482
if you got something out of
this video and you enjoyed it.

401
00:15:37,482 --> 00:15:39,255
Subscribe, if you aren't already,

402
00:15:39,255 --> 00:15:43,082
and, and I will see you
guys in the next video.

403
00:15:43,082 --> 00:15:44,920
I'm supposed to take my
hat off at this point,

404
00:15:44,920 --> 00:15:47,181
but you're so far away, I'd have to like,

405
00:15:47,181 --> 00:15:49,240
I'd have to like run it up.

406
00:15:49,240 --> 00:15:52,144
(upbeat music)

407
00:15:52,144 --> 00:15:53,503
Gotta get warmed up, gotta get warmed up,

408
00:15:53,503 --> 00:15:54,752
gotta get warmed up.

409
00:15:54,752 --> 00:15:55,585
Mm hm!

410
00:15:56,759 --> 00:15:57,592
Mm.

411
00:15:58,717 --> 00:16:00,386
(fingers drumming)

412
00:16:00,386 --> 00:16:04,386
Is there any coffee left
in this, a little bit.
